A Book of Milton J. Strother's Colored Newspaper column.
Here is one of the columns my grandfather wrote that moved me to tears. This message has crossed time, even death and is still relevant today:

“Be Ye Faithful Unto Death & I Will Give You A Crown of Life"

Be ye faithful unto death and I will give you a crown of life. All men and women are servants to one another. It is a great honor to be called a faithful servant.

The greatest man in any community is he that renders the greatest service to his community.

The only difference between men is that some are serving in a higher capacity than others, but we are servants just the same, whether public or private.

Those who are ashamed to be called a servant make a great mistake and are greatly in need of common sense. While writing these lines I have in mind some of our boys and girls who are blessed the splendid opportunity of attending our schools and colleges. This mistaken notion can only be corrected by fireside training or what is called home training.

Teach them that education means more work and better work and is an honor, and idleness is a disgrace. I have more respect for a woman with a bundle of dirty clothes on her head returning home to wash them than I have for one walking the streets all dressed up with nowhere to go.

There is room in this country for every industrious, law-abiding man and woman who is willing to work.”
